Gerrit Schaafsma is lecturer at Leiden University College.
Gerrit Schaafsma holds a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Amsterdam. His research is about climate change and civil disobedience with an interest in both the theory and the practice of principled law-breaking. Working in the public philosophy tradition of James Tully, his work is informed by those engaging directly in disobedient actions while also drawing on the academic debates that have shaped public ideas about what civil disobedience is, and of its role in a democratic society. Gerrit is also well-versed in the history of environmental social movement and climate obstructionism and is deeply engaged in investigating how academics and institutions can effectively respond to the climate crisis. His other research interests include environmental philosophy (especially climate justice), global justice and liberal egalitarian theories of justice. He teaches at Leiden University College.
