Geke Burger is a historian specialising in early modern maritime history, with a focus on the sixteenth- and seventeenth centuries. Her research usually lies at the intersection between archaeology and history as she includes archaeological sources, such as shipwrecks, in addition to historical ones. Combining material culture with archival sources allows for a more complete and multifaceted picture of the past. Her research interests include shipping, maritime culture, trade and knowledge networks and colonial history.

Geke Burger (MA) works as a PhD-candidate on the project 'The Scheurrak SO1 shipwreck in the maritime cultural landscape of the early modern Netherlands (1550-1650). The project is embedded in both the Institute of History at the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Archaeology.
