Frank Israel received his PhD at the Leiden Observatory with his thesis "Radio investigations of galactic and extragalacic HII regions". His research interests lie within the interstellar medium, galaxies centers, star formation, the Local Group, dwarf galaxies and the Magellanic Clouds.

Israel is chairman of Stichting Skepsis, a Dutch skeptic organization whose mission is to subject extraordinary claims to a critical, scientifically sound research and educate about pseudo-science and the paranormal.
