Francesca van Ravenstein is affiliated to the Institute of Criminal Law and Criminology as a PhD candidate since May 2024.
Francesca van Ravenstein is a PhD candidate in the Criminology department at the Institute of Criminal Justice and Criminology. She completed a bachelor in Criminology and a minor in Child Abuse and Maltreatment at Leiden University. During her bachelor, she worked as an intern in a research project on public perceptions of environmental crime. She completed a master's in International Crime, Conflict, and Criminology at the Free University of Amsterdam (cum laude). Her thesis focused on 'ideal' victims of conflict. After her studies, Francesca conducted a research project on undue influence of the elderly as a junior researcher.
As a PhD candidate, Francesca is involved in the Life in Custody study, conducted by the Institute of Criminal Law and Criminology on behalf of the Dutch Custodial Institutions Agency of the Ministry of Security and Justice. This survey research aims to improve our understanding of staff and detained individuals' perceptions and experiences of prison life, as well as the effects (during and after imprisonment) of differences in experiences of prison life. Francesca's research focuses on commitment of prison staff, their work environment, their contribution to the attainment of organizational goals, and their relationships with detained individuals.
