Research
Fenno Noij’s research concerns the role of written texts (e.g. inscriptions, graffiti) as material objects in ancient landscapes. By applying the sociolinguistic framework “Linguistic Landscape Studies” to case-studies from antiquity, he aims to better understand the way texts change the perception of a space (and vice versa) in the past.
Fenno’s PhD focuses on the Linguistic Landscape of Roman Italy, using Ostia and Pompeii as case-studies. By reconstructing the Linguistic Landscapes of these cities, his research allows for a greater understanding of the way their population perceived their environment. Additionally, the two case-studies make it possible to study the way that this perception changed overtime.
