More information about Fé de Jonge

Fé de Jonge holds an LLB from Utrecht University, an LLM in Public International Law from Leiden University and a MA in Middle Eastern Studies from Lund University. Her research focuses on the histories of international law, examining forgotten or understudied parts of international legal history and critically re-examining well-known stories of international law’s past. With the critical examination and re-examination of past institutions, events and relationships which have shaped the field of international law, Fé aims to further expand and diversify the histories of this field.

Her PhD research focuses on the creation of two international criminal justice institutions by the Ottoman Empire and Europe in the aftermath of the 1860 civil war in Mount Lebanon. Following recent developments within the studies of international legal history, and in particular Sundhya Pahuja’s ‘laws of encounter’, this research project involves an in-depth study of the Tribunal and Commission, their creation and proceedings, and asks how competing forms of authority were performed by the Ottoman Empire and European states in the context of the Tribunal and Commission. Such a study not only sheds light on an under-examined internationalised justice mechanism of the past, but also on late nineteenth century Ottoman and European relations, the performance of authority in these relations and the role played by international law in this regard.

Her PhD project received the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds Grant in 2019. Fé was also a Visiting Researcher at the Max Planck Institute Luxembourg for International, European and Regulatory Procedural Law between May and November 2020.
