Etienne Bourel is a social anthropologist and post-doctoral fellow of Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology at Leiden University. His research project is about The social life of the Ogooue-Ivindo forests.
From July 2023 to May 2024, he took part in another research project in the laboratory Eco-anthropologie, based at the Musée de l’Homme in Paris and part of the French National Museum of Natural History. He investigated about interactions between humans and primates (namely Barbarian macaques) in zoos. This interdisciplinary research provided him the occasion to work with primatologists and about citizen sciences.
He is editorial committee member of Terrain and the Journal des anthropologues. He is also co-administrator of the social sciences association Le Tamis (in Marseille, France) and he is scientific committee member of the scientific blogging platform Hypothèses.
Recent publications
His recent publications include Les forêts communautaires au Gabon : des alternatives à la déforestation ? (Mouvements), Des images de soi dans le monde forestier gabonais (Images du travail, travail des images), (Dé)rég(u)ler la forêt (Terrain, with Joséphine Herbelin) and Travail (Anthropen dictionary).
Together with Guillaume Vadot, he edited a special issue of the Cahiers d’études africaines about wage labour and lower classes in Africa (with the introduction translated in English : The wage earner in African Studies: A research topic that deserves more attention). With Judith Hayem, he edited a special issue of the Journal des anthropologues about subjectivations of/in work (with the introduction translated in English: Subjectivations of Work: Subjectivations in Labour).
Doctoral research
His PhD thesis was about how people work and live on logging camps in Gabon and how forestry in Central Africa takes sustainable development into account. He graduated from the university Lyon 2 (France) and his thesis was awarded by the Pierre Bouvier prize for the socioanthropology 2023.
