Barend Verkerk completed his master's in Company Law at Leiden University in 2001. He then started working as a lawyer.

Barend has lectured at the Leiden University's Department of Corporate Law on a part-time basis since 2006. He regularly speaks on corporate law elsewhere. He has published articles on corporate law and commented on case law in various legal periodicals.

As a lawyer, Barend has been associated with AKD in Rotterdam since 2002. Over the years, he has gained extensive experience in legal advice and litigation on corporate and commercial matters. He has acted in proceedings before various Dutch courts, including inquiry proceedings before the Enterprise Chamber of the Amsterdam Court of Appeal ('Ondernemingskamer'). He has also argued cases before the European Court of Justice.
