Dr Antonio Missiroli was NATO Assistant Secretary-General, responsible for Emerging Security Challenges, from December 2017 to October 2020. Dr Antonio Missiroli was NATO Assistant Secretary-General, responsible for Emerging Security Challenges, from December 2017 to October 2020. Here at ISGA, Dr Missiroli intends to continue following issues related to emerging security challenges as they develop, with particular emphasis on their impact on conventional strategic thinking and EU/NATO policy-making.

Prior to joining NATO, Dr. Antonio Missiroli was the Director of the European Union Institute for Security Studies (EUISS) in Paris (2012-17) and chaired the Executive Academic Board of the European Security and Defence College (2015-17).

Previously, he was Adviser at the Bureau of European Policy Advisers (BEPA) of the European Commission (2010-2012), in charge of institutional outreach; Director of Studies at the European Policy Centre in Brussels (2005-2010); and Senior Research Fellow at the W/EU Institute for Security Studies in Paris (1998-2005).

He was also Head of European Studies at CeSPI in Rome (1994-97) and a Visiting Fellow at St Antony’s College, Oxford (1996-97).

As well as being a professional journalist, he also taught at Bath, Trento and Boston universities, at SAIS/Johns Hopkins, the College of Europe (Bruges), Sciences Po (Paris) and the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna (Pisa).

Dr Missiroli holds a PhD degree in Contemporary History from the Scuola Normale Superiore (Pisa) and a Master’s degree in International Public Policy from SAIS/Johns Hopkins University.

He has published extensively and in various languages on contemporary Germany, European defence matters, EU institutional affairs, and unconventional security issues. His latest work covers PeSCo, cyber and hybrid threats, and the military response to COVID-19.
