Antonella Maiello is an Assistant Professor of Governance of Sustainability at the Institute of Public Administration, Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs of Leiden University (The Hague – Campus). Her research concerns processes, practices, and experiments of (social and economic) change in different sustainability-related governance domains (waste, water, energy, and food) with a specific interest in waste and circularity.
She is intrigued by transformations triggered by collective actions and collective subjects (publics) like different kinds of communities and/or cooperatives, as well as by traditional and new forms of commoning initiatives. While she focuses on relations and encounters that these publics develop with the state at multiple institutional scales, she is especially interested in the kind of values (ethics), such as care and stewardship, and knowledge (skills) that drive these encounters and their impact on ecosystems and place livability. Engaging with political ecology theories, in her work, she employs socio-spatial constructs like scale, networks, boundaries, and infrastructures as analytical lenses to make sense of political relationalities and power dynamics. She favors transdisciplinary methods, like action research, and is committed to the societal impact of academic work.
Her current research agenda revolves around migrant skills on textile repairs and their impact on migrant integration and on diversifying the economy in a post-capitalist perspective; the role of networks in post-consumer textile flows and value chain; the role of reclaimers communities in politics and practice of waste governance (focus Rio de Janeiro State); the institutional change impact of participatory multi-modelling for regional energy decision-making (in the Netherlands); the collectives-state relationships in the community-driven initiatives in the governance of sustainability.
