Andrew G.Webb is a Professor of Radiology and the founding Director of the Gorter MRI Center at the Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum. He has been awarded a Wolfgang Paul Prize from the German Humboldt Foundation (2004), Simon Stevin Meester Prize from the NWO (2017), two ERC Advanced Grants (2014-2020, 2021-2026) and jointly the Huibregtenprijs in 2023. He was elected to the Royal National Academy of Sciences in 2023. He currently chairs the Scientific Advisory Boards of the Max Planck Institute for Cybernetics in Tuebingen and the Instituto de Instrumentación para Imagen Molecular in Valencia. In 2021 he was the elected president of the European Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and Biology.

High Field Magnetic Resonance

The leerstoel of Professor of High Field Magnetic Resonance Imaging as Director of the C.J.Gorter Center for High Field MRI was set up in 2008 with a mission to translate basic science/engineering/MR physics into the clinical arena as rapidly as possible. We have established ourselves as one of the most innovative research groups in MRI, with translation of many new hardware/software developments into clinical research studies of Alzheimers, Huntingtons, Lupus, Duchennes, epilepsy, and uveal melanoma amongst others. Many of these diseases have direct counterparts in animal models, with preclinical MRI an important component of the laboratory. My specific interest is in developing new MRI hardware, both at very high and very low frequencies, from human to cellular size scales. In this capacity we are a member of a number of NWO National Roadmaps for Large-Scale Research Facilities such as uNMR-NL, and are part of many Horizon2020 grants. Most recently we have translated our hardware knowledge into very low field MRI applications, with the ultimate aim of bringing portable MRI to communities without the financial and infrastructural resources of the developed world.

Academic career

Andrew Webb graduated from the University of Bristol with a bachelors degree in Chemistry and obtained his PhD from the University of Cambridge in Medicinal Chemistry in 1990. After a postdoc in the Department of Radiology at the University of Florida, he joined the faculty of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He was appointed full professor in 2000, and worked for three years in the Department of Physics at the University of Wurzburg on a Humboldt Fellowship. In 2008 he was appointed to run the newly-formed C.J.Gorter Centre at Leiden University Medical Center. His main research areas are related to translation of new engineering concepts into the clinic. He has published over 400 peer-reviewed articles and has authored five academic text books.

Prizes and honourable appointments

Andrew Webb ontving de Simon Stevin Meester-prijs van de Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (2017), een European Research Council Advanced Grant (2015-2020), de Wolfgang Paul Prize van de Humboldt Foundation in Duitsland (2001-2004), en zal worden de ontvanger van een Beckman Institute Senior Fellowship in 2019.
