Anahita Arian is an assistant professor at the Institute of Political Science.
Before joining Leiden University in 2024, Anahita was a postdoc at the University of Cambridge. She holds a PhD in International Relations (IR) from the University of Groningen and has worked as a lecturer at the University of Groningen and University of Erfurt. She has been a visiting scholar at the University of Oxford, Freie University Berlin, Universidad de San Francisco de Quito, Ecuador, and the Orient Institute in Beirut, Lebanon.
Her research is interdisciplinary. It encompasses the disciplines of Political Science, IR, History, Philosophy, Anthropology and Literature and focuses on three broad themes: (1) the history of international relations, (2) meta-theory and theories of international relations, and (3) pedagogy. Her historical research explores how practices of and knowledge formation about sovereignty, diplomacy, encounters, empire, gender, sex, race, and religion are interlinked with the realm of politics, the exercise of power, and the institution and governance of political orders in the Islamicate world/Eurasia and the Indian Ocean region.
Her theoretically-oriented research focuses on questions pertaining to ontology, epistemology, meta-theory and metaphysics next to intellectual history, entanglements between Europe and the Islamicate world, and international political theories from the Global South. Finally, in her pedagogical research, Anahita explores questions of affect and emotional intelligence next to how critical, reflexive, and inclusive pedagogies can effectively address the challenges for teaching and learning about IR in a world characterized by pluriversality.
