Amit John Kurien is an environmental social scientist interested in the multidimensional issues at the convergence of environmental change and rural societal dynamics. He studies the political ecology of land use change in jhum (swidden/shifting cultivation) landscapes in Garo Hills, Northeast India. His emphasis is to understand issues at the interface of forest, agriculture, and livelihood changes aimed at informing environmental conservation and development problems. In the Futuring Heritage project, he brings his familiarity with Meghalaya and Northeast India and his proficiency as a geographer and GIS and remote sensing analyst to engage with questions around spatiality and mapping of spaces with multiple stakeholders, and contested values of and claims to land. He is proficient in qual-quant social science methods and is a conservation biologist by early training. Amit is an Assistant Professor 'Environmental Science' at the RV University, Bengaluru, India. Amit's primary institutional webpage is found here: https://rvu.edu.in/team/amit-john-kurien/
