Alexander Wilkinson is a PhD candidate at the Faculty of Archaeology.
Current research
Alexander's PhD research is part of the ERC HOME: Palaeolithic shelters in East-Central Europe project, led by Dr. Wei Chu. HOME aims to identify and assess different Palaeolithic shelters to understand the dynamic ways humans lived throughout the changing environments of the Late Pleistocene.
Alexander's particular research focuses on cave site use in East-Central Europe. He aims to assess the nature of cave occupations by finding and investigating archaeological and coeval environmental traces through inter-disciplinary methods. Of particular interest is changing cave use through different seasons, climates, and demographic shifts. Alexander hopes to add to how we understand human survival strategies through Late Pleistocene East-Central Europe.
Curriculum Vitae
Alexander completed a Bachelor and Masters of Science at the University of York in Bioarchaeology (2020-2024). He undertook modules that included prehistory, biomolecular uses within Archaeology, zooarchaeology, data science, and osteology. His dissertations focused on a combination of isotope analysis and zooarchaeology to investigate changing husbandry strategies within the Late Eneolithic of Romania. Both dissertations involved collaborations which he facilitated with research groups within Romania and Spain.
Outside of University, Alexander has previously been a part of multiple excavations across Europe including The United Kingdom, the Iberian Peninsula, Croatia, and Romania, working with a range of both historical and prehistorical archaeology.
