Adam Knight is a PhD candidate at the Leiden Institute for Area Studies (LIAS) where he focuses on the design, implementation and consequences of the Chinese social credit system. He is a regular media commentator as well as speaker on the topic of smart governance and internet policy in China.

Profile
Adam Knightâs research forms a subproject of "The Smart State: Big Data, Artificial Intelligence and Law in China" led by Dr. Rogier Creemers and funded by the NWO. This subproject will survey how the social credit system is conceptualised, negotiated and implemented. This includes contrasting smart governance at the central and local levels, state and citizen perspectives of the social credit system, and the role of the private sector in its construction.
Adam holds a First Class degree in Chinese Studies from the University of Oxford, during which time he was a Fung Scholar. Adam also holds an MSc in Social Science of the Internet (Distinction) from the Oxford Internet Institute, where he was a Henfrey Scholar. Adam frequently contributes to reports in media such as the BBC, Financial Times and South China Morning Post.
Adam is the cofounder of a technology consultancy and ecommerce agency established in 2014 with a focus on the Chinese market.
