Research
Dr. Stefan de Jong is attached to the Dual PhD Centre as a guest lecturer. He teaches the course ‘Impact and Valorisation of PhD Research’. He is also an associate professor in the Department of Public Administration and Sociology at Erasmus University Rotterdam. Stefan conducts research on the organisation and evaluation of social contributions of scientific research and on professional staff of universities. He publishes on these topics in international academic journals, including Public Understanding of Science, Research Evaluation, Research Policy, Science and Public Policy and Studies in Higher Education. He has also written opinion pieces in the Financieel Dagblad and NRC Handelsblad and several blog posts for the London School of Economics Impact Blog. Stefan has conducted more than 70 workshops on social impact, in which a total of more than 1,000 researchers have participated. Stefan chairs national network The Impact Alliance.
Previously, Stefan worked as an associate professor in the Department of Organisational Science at Tilburg University.He was a visiting researcher at the Department of Sociology at the University of Chicago and INGENIO CSIC/UPV in Valencia as a Marie Curie Fellow. Thanks to an NWO Rubicon grant, he has also worked as a visiting researcher at the Manchester Institute of Innovation Research at The University of Manchester. Stefan started his research career as a researcher at the Science System Assessment Department of the Rathenau Institute. The research he did there resulted in the thesis ‘Engaging Scientists: Organising Valorisation in The Netherlands’, which he defended at Leiden University in 2015. Stefan holds a master's degree in innovation science from Utrecht University and a bachelor's degree in biology from Wageningen University & Research.
