Research project
SCRREEN3
How can the EU better understand supply and supply risks for a large list of screened critical raw materials? How will demand grow for critical raw materials in the EU, in line with evolving technologies, innovation, and new products coming to market? How can we improve EU official statistics and to further build the EU knowledge base of primary and secondary raw materials.

Short abstract
Based on the experience and background of SCRREEN and SCRREEN2, the prolongation of the project SCRREEN3 will continue to develop and animate an Expert Network which will contribute to expert advice in support of decision-making at the EU level covering all the raw materials and their value chains screened in the CRMs assessment.
Project description
Periodically, the European Commission publishes a list of CRMs based on a criticality assessment at EU level on a wide range of raw materials. The first list, published in 2010, contained 14 CRMs. The revised list published in 2014 included additional CRMs reaching a total of 20 CRMS. The 2017 list reached 27 materials.
SCRREEN3 will provide expert advice in support of decision-making at the EU level covering all the raw materials and their value chains screened in the CRM 2023 assessment exercise, contribute to improving EU official statistics and to further building the EU knowledge base on primary and secondary raw materials, develop and animate a network of EU experts covering all the raw materials and their value chains screened in the CRMs assessment exercise.
SCRREEN3 continues to advise and support DG-GROW with their criticality assessments, and research questions surrounding critical raw materials.
Leiden University contributes expertise in material flow analysis and environmental impact analysis surrounding critical raw materials.
Research question
SCREEN3 will:
- Improve EU official statistics and to further build the EU knowledge base of primary and secondary raw materials.
- Strengthen and develop an EU expert network and community covering all raw materials screened in 2023 the CRM assessment.
- Flexibly support the Commission in policy making related to CRMs in general or linked to specific applications or sectors; as well in relevant events organized by the Commission.
- Support the Commission in the analysis of the future supply and demand of raw materials, policy and technology gaps and innovation potential along the raw materials value chains.
