Description
In this proposal we aim to advance new antibiotic compound classes derived from and inspired by natural products that have not traditionally been seen as candidates for development. Using a multidisciplinary approach, firmly grounded in synthetic chemistry and chemical biology, we will prepare and validate new antimicrobial agents designed to target the ESKAPE pathogens. Specifically, novel (semi)synthetic compounds capable of binding to bacterial cell wall precursors will be prepared and their antibiotic activity assessed. In addition, novel cyclic peptide scaffolds with potent activity and in vivo stability will be investigated as entirely new classes of antimicrobials.
