Synthetic fuel can be produced from coal and vapor by a catalytic chemical reaction. The researchers will study the molecular aspects of this reaction. A recent discovery points towards the formation of grapheme - material of the 2010 Nobel price - during the reaction that opens up a new insight into this important process.
