Since the disasters of Enschede (fireworks explosion) and Volendam (disastrous fire in a pub) the societal discussion on external safety is rekindled. One of the safety issues under discussion is the transport and storage of hazardous chemicals. Chlorine, ammonia and LPG are identified as priority substances. Therefore the Ministry of the Environment commissioned this project. The aim is to investigate the current situation. On the one hand, an overview of present transports and storages is generated, including a safety risk assessment. On the other hand, the economic value of the chains is estimated. This information is to be used later on for Cost Benefit Analyses of risk reduction options.
