Growing research has shown that project-based learning (PBL) and case-based learning (CBL) in higher education are effective in preparing students with the skills needed to succeed in the complex, rapidly evolving world of today. Those two teaching approaches are claimed to effectively strengthen students' creative problem-solving skills, allow students to actively research open- ended real-world scenarios to build practical solutions to problems, improve students' collaboration, and encourage students to read and discuss intricate, real-world events to cultivate critical thinking and reflective judgment. PBL and CBL support students to work in groups to actively construct their knowledge through the ‘reorganisation of their previously acquired mental structures’. The study indicates that students' motivation and engagement in PBL and CBL significantly affected students' academic performance.
Teacher certification is a government program in Indonesia that is run in several universities including UPI. The program provides for in-service teachers to improve competencies in teaching. As part of the UPI program, the use of PBL and CBL in the teacher certification program learning process should be promoted and it has been implemented since the program launched in 2018. However, no substantial research to investigate students' learning behaviour and engagement in teacher certification programs which apply PBL and CBL is yet implemented. Therefore the investigation of this topic is both relevant and urgent. Student engagement correlates with student performance in class, in short students' behaviour and engagement determine successful students' learning. The international collaboration between UPI and Leiden University which has implemented PBL and CBL is needed to give insight into good practice of PBL and CBL implementation in teacher education programs.
The output of the research will be an article submitted to a reputable journal and an article presented internationally.
