Teacher dashboards and real-time student data are increasingly becoming part of daily educational practice. Despite the potential value of dashboards and these data, little is known about how they are effectively utilized in primary education, particularly regarding which teacher characteristics play a crucial role in this process.
Social relevance
The increasing presence of ICT, adaptive learning systems, and real-time student data is becoming the norm in our education system. While teachers are expected to fully leverage the value of these data, we know they often struggle to work with the typically visualized data presented on dashboards. This study provides insights into the various factors involved, helping teachers and schools enhance the integration of teacher dashboards and learning analytics, making their use more effective and efficient.
Scientific relevance
Earlier research on teacher dashboards hypothesizes multiple times that teacher characteristics influence the use of and actions taken based on teacher dashboards. This study provides an opportunity to establish and confirm this relationship theoretically. In doing so, models concerning teacher behavior, dashboard Use Models and teacher competences related to ICT implementation can be connected to gain deeper insights into how these models are interrelated in practice.
Topic and research question
Teacher dashboards and real-time student data are increasingly becoming part of daily educational practice. Despite the potential value of dashboards and these data, little is known about how they are effectively utilized in primary education, particularly regarding which teacher characteristics play a crucial role in this process. That is why we want to research which basic characteristics and skills and knowledge influence the use of and actions based on real-time student data presented on a teacher dashboard in primary education.
Materials and methods
Data are collected through various methods to allow for multiple perspectives in addressing the research questions. The focus is always on teachers using ALT systems or pre-service teachers. Both qualitative and quantitative data are combined, such as lesson observations measuring dashboard usage frequencies and interviews with primary school teachers.
