To the surprise of many, the advisory referendum of 23 June 2016 in the UK and Gibraltar resulted in a majority voting in favour of withdrawal from European Union membership (so-called „Brexit“). It is therefore expected that the UK Government will notify the European Union of its intention to leave the EU, thereby starting the procedure that is described in Art. 50 of the Treaty on European Union (TEU). It is the first time that this occurs, and it raises many legal and political questions.

Against this background, Prof. Christa Tobler (Professor of European Law at Leiden University and Basel University) developed together with her co-author Jacques Beglinger and in the framework of the „EUR-Charts: The EU Law in Charts Project“ a number of “Brexit Charts”. Charts are documents using graphic elements to convey information. The “Brexit Charts” aim to provide information on the withdrawal procedure under Art. 50 TEU, on the legal consequences of leaving the EU and on the future relationship of the withdrawing state with the European Union.

The new, special issue charts are available for download at the EUR-Charts project website, at the project website, www.eur-charts.eu (under „download“, first item).
