The project centers on my own work as a composer-performer, as well as on music by artists such as Barrett, Braxton, Cardew, Goldstein, Hayward, Ostertag, Polwechsel, Schnebel, and Smith. Realizations of select pieces and comparative analysis of scores and recordings will reveal phenomenological links among aesthetically and historically diverse work, aiming to develop a use-based theory of notation for improvisers relevant to artists and scholars alike. The dissertation will be published as a media-rich website.
