These are just a handful of questions that will be addressed in this book that consists of four parts. First it focuses on the essence of terrorism as an instrument to achieve certain goals and the difficulties in defining the term. The second part provides an overview of the state of the art of terrorism studies. The most interesting results of this academic field are examined and compared with empirical evidence with the aim to either stress their importance or to debunk them as myths. The book ends with a glimpse into the future: trends, new developments, and suggestions for both academics and policymakers.

'We are very excited that this book is now fully updated and includes a lot more additional case studies, literature and suggestions for future research'
Jeanine de Roy van Zuijdewijn and Edwin Bakker

This second edition pays more attention to diversity issues in terrorism studies and to impact management, accompanied by vivid examples and specific cases such as the aftermath of the attacks on Christchurch and Paris. Moreover, it is updated with the most recent developments between 2014 and 2022, such as the rise and fall of the Islamic State.
