Meet our new intern: Sijmen Wals
I am Sijmen Wals and this semester I'll be the new intern at the Netherlands-Flemish Institute in Cairo.
After two pandemic years, I look forward to see what is possible again and to get to know Cairo and Egypt better. Egypt is a fascinating place, and I am therefore excited to take part in the experience of being an intern at the NVIC and live in Egypt. I hope to learn more about the institute, its programmes and its relations in Cairo and beyond. In Leiden I study the MA Middle Eastern Studies and I am very interested in the political history of the region, but also its languages and culture. During my stay in Egypt, I hope to improve both my Arabic as well as my Egyptian Arabic skills, which I started studying in Leiden. Moreover, during my time here, I also want to focus on individual research about Egyptian society and the politics of preservation in Cairo and Egypt.
