Elke Moons appointed professor by special appointment of the chair ‘Crime Statistics’ at Leiden University

As of 1 April 2025, Professor E.A.L.M.G (Elke) Moons has been appointed professor by special appointment of the chair ‘Crime Statistics’ at Leiden University’s Institute of Criminal Law and Criminology at Leiden Law School.

By establishing this special chair, Leiden University and Statistics Netherlands (CBS) are strengthening their collaboration to conduct socially relevant research, using more CBS data in the field of security perception and crime victimisation. This new chair gives Leiden University, and in particular the Institute of Criminal Law and Criminology, an interesting boost to its existing and highly-rated research and education. The collaboration will extend the possibilities for CBS to innovate and improve statistical products in this domain, and will result in greater use of CBS data in research projects and education.

Professor Moons: ‘The Security Monitor of CBS, among other things, provides a unique data source for scientific research into various aspects including perceptions of safety, perceived nuisance and actual victimisation in various forms of online and offline crime. Leiden University, too, has a long tradition in the field of victimisation research. By establishing this special chair, the use of this data will be greatly expanded'. Professor Maarten Kunst: ‘We are delighted to be able to continue this tradition and give it a new boost through the appointment of Elke Moons and the framework agreement concluded with

An important area of focus in the new chair is the impact of crime on victims and the differences in this between groups of victims, for example due to underlying vulnerabilities. The research fits seamlessly into both the CBS multi-year programme and the research programme of the Institute of Criminal Law and Criminology.

With this special chair, the CBS and the Institute of Criminal Law and Criminology can give further substance to the framework agreement that both parties entered into in December 2024.
