Leiden University wins Frits Kalshoven International Law Moot Court Competition 2025

Every year, the Netherlands Red Cross and Belgian Red Cross-Flanders organize the Frits Kalshoven International Humanitarian Law Competition. Eight teams from Belgium and the Netherlands participated in the 17th edition of the competition 5-7 March 2025 in The Hague, The Netherlands. The team of Leiden University was pronounced the winner of the Moot Court.

The competition aims to provide students with an opportunity to practically engage with international humanitarian law and deepen their knowledge thereof by attending expert lectures, engaging in real-life armed conflict simulations or roleplays, expand their professional network and ultimately, by competing against other teams during the Moot Court, in which they will plead a fictional case related to IHL.
Leiden University was represented by Sanni Suomela, Sarina Fuerst, and Sadhbh Ní Ghráda, all currently enrolled in the LL.M. programme in Public International Law. Additional to winning the Moot Court, one of the team members, Sadhbh Ní Ghráda, received the award for the Best Oralist.

The team was supported throughout their journey by Annick Vossebelt (coach, Teaching and Research Associate at the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies) and Dari Nof (assistant coach, currently enrolled in the Advanced LL.M. Programme in International Dispute Settlement and Arbitration).

Warm congratulations to the Leiden team on this great achievement!
