Faculty of Archaeology ranks 4th in QS World University Ranking
It is the ninth year in a row that the Faculty of Archaeology is placed in the top ten of archaeological institutes worldwide. The QS World University Rankings by Subject looks at criteria like academic reputation and citation ratios.
Highly valued
Dean Jan Kolen is pleased with the Faculty's high score in the QS World University Ranking, ranking 4th: 'It is an incredible achievement that we have risen again in the QS World Ranking. With last year's (shared) fifth position and this year's fourth position, it is clear that we are firmly in the Top 5 and now really belong there.'
'It makes it clear that our international colleagues highly value us for our scientific work and our international visibility, although the ranking is also largely based on measurable performance.'
Collective strength
'It is also becoming increasingly clear that this appreciation is not only due to prizes, grants and individual achievements,' Kolen adds. 'Seven years ago, we agreed that we want to work hard on our collective strength and collegial cooperation, because we assume that science is always teamwork. We no longer distinguish between researchers and lecturers, scientific staff and non-scientific staff, or between early career researchers and senior researchers. We form a collective and that is now paying off. From the Faculty Board I would like to thank and congratulate the staff of our Faculty.'
Output and reputation
The QS Ranking by Subject is based on academic output and reputation. For years now, the Faculty has been among the Top 10 in the World Ranking, along with the archaeological and anthropological institutions of Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Berkeley, Stanford, UCL and Durham, among others. In the past decade, our Faculty has consistently been ranked as the highest-qualified institute outside the US and UK.
