Christa Tobler gives a public lecture at the University of Tasmania on the European human rights approach to climate change
For several years, the University of Tasmania has been ranked first among universities worldwide in terms of climate action. The interest in this topic is therefore very pronounced.
On 4 March 2025, the Faculty of Law at the University of Tasmania hosted a public lecture by Christa Tobler. The lecture centred on the decision of the European Court of Human Rights in the Climate Seniors case and its political consequences in Switzerland as the defendant in this case. In her presentation, Christa Tobler also made references to Australia. The title of the lecture was: ‘Climate change and the “KlimaSeniorinnen” before the European Court of Human Rights: A legal and political thriller’. The event was well attended and led to a lively discussion.
Christa Tobler had previously dealt with the KlimaSeniorinnen decision as part of her specialisation in discrimination law, see her blog post ‘Intersectionality in the KlimaSeniorinnen case - “older women” in action’, EU Law Live, 17 May 2024.
