Vasiliki Kosta and Olga Ceran speak on academic freedom at the European Parliament

On 5 February, Dr Kosta and Dr Ceran spoke at the high-level conference entitled ‘Perspectives on academic freedom in Europe and beyond’, organised in Brussels by the European Parliament’s Panel for the Future of Science and Technology (STOA).

The conference brought together policymakers, academics, and other stakeholders to discuss the state of academic freedom in the EU and new initiatives to protect it. It was opened by Christian Ehler, STOA Chair, and Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament.

The conference was informed by the upcoming edition of the European Parliament’s Academic Freedom Monitor that reports on the state of academic freedom across the EU. This year, for the first time, the Monitor includes not only an analysis of de facto state of academic freedom, but also a separate part discussing the constitutional legal protection of academic freedom across the EU Member States. Dr Kosta and Dr Ceran, authors of the 'Overview of de jure academic freedom protection', presented the analysis in Session II on ‘Furthering the assessment of academic freedom: concept, methodology and monitoring’. The session was opened by Peter Maassen (University of Oslo), the lead author of the ‘Analysis of the de facto state of academic freedom in the EU - country overview’, and moderated by Ferenc Hammer (ELTE University, Budapest).

The EP Academic Freedom Monitor 2024 will be published soon. Its key findings and policy options are already available online.
