Leiden University to represent the Netherlands in the 2025 Jessup International Rounds

On 31 January 2025, Leiden University participated in the Dutch National Rounds of the 2025 Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, the world’s oldest and largest moot court competition, featuring more than 800 teams from over 100 countries and jurisdictions.

The team of Leiden University was pronounced the overall winners of the Dutch National Rounds, receiving the Best Team and the Best Memorial awards. Additionally, one of the team members, Ron van der Horst, received the award for the Best Oralist. Following these results, Leiden University is honoured to have the opportunity to represent the Netherlands in the White & Case International Rounds scheduled to take place from 29 March to 5 April 2025 in Washington DC, USA.

In this year’s International Rounds, over 150 teams of law students from across the globe will be addressing submissions in The Case Concerning the Naegea Sea  between the States of Ambrosia and Rovinia. This case concerns various legal issues, including (1) the rights and obligations of other members of the international community when two persons claim to be the legitimate president of a State; (2) invocation of immunity for government officials accused of grave violations of human rights; (3) the legal consequences of receding coastlines for the maritime zones of coastal States; and (4) the interpretation of the compromissory clause in a treaty creating a regional organisation.

Leiden University was represented by Ron van der Horst, Jingyi Liu, Ella Marie Pyne, and Jiehuang Huang, all currently enrolled in the LL.M. programme in Public International Law. The team was supported throughout their journey by Kseniia Soloveva (coach, PhD Candidate at Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies) and Varad Choudhary (assistant coach, enrolled in Advanced LL.M. programme in International Dispute Settlement and Arbitration).

Warm congratulations to the team members and their coaches on this great achievement! We wish the team best of luck for the international rounds of the 2025 Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition!
