Brussels excursion: Career opportunities and networking
On 3 December 2024, Career Service FGGA organised an inspiring excursion to Brussels for students of the faculty. The programme provided a unique opportunity to explore European institutions, organisations, and alumni living and working in this dynamic city. The group departed early in the morning from The Hague Central Station in a full bus, heading for the heart of Europe.
European Commission and Blue Book Traineeship
The first stop was the European Commission, where alumni and speakers shared valuable insights into working within this influential institution. They explained how legislation is developed, implemented, and monitored, and highlighted the essential skills required for these processes. Students also received practical tips on successfully applying for the prestigious Blue Book Traineeship – an important stepping stone to a European career.
Sustainable Public Affairs and the Netherlands’ Permanent Representation to the EU
The third visit was to Sustainable Public Affairs, where an interactive presentation demonstrated how the organisation promotes sustainability in European policy. They detailed how lobbying and collaborations with forward-thinking clients contribute to environmental goals.
Next, the group visited the Netherlands’ Permanent Representation (PV) to the EU. Here, students gained a fascinating insight into how the Netherlands advocates its interests within the EU. In addition to substantive topics, the presentation also touched on social life in Brussels. As many professionals come from outside the city, close social networks naturally form, fostering a welcoming atmosphere both professionally and personally.
Closing Networking Reception with Alumni and Return to The Hague
The day ended on a festive note with a networking reception at a cosy café near the iconic Berlaymont building. Students had the chance to meet Leiden University alumni who now work in Brussels in an informal setting. With drinks and snacks, they forged valuable connections and learned more about living and working in this international city.
When it was time to leave, the bus was ready to bring the group back to The Hague. The cheerful atmosphere persisted on the return journey as students shared their experiences and reflected on the day. Upon arrival, they said their goodbyes, enriched with new insights and inspiring memories.
