Vasiliki Kosta speaks at Council of Europe Conference ‘Academic Freedom in Action: A Step Forward in Safeguarding Democracy’
Kosta spoke at the conference “Academic Freedom in Action”, held in Strasbourg on 13-14 November 2024. The conference brought together experts, educators, and policymakers to underline the democratic mission of higher education and the critical importance of safeguarding academic freedom. The event served as the launch of the Council of Europe’s "Academic Freedom in Action" project, which aims to protect and promote academic freedom as an essential value in higher education.
Kosta spoke on the panel "Academic Freedom and the Fundamental Values of Higher Education", organised with the European Court of Human Rights, examining the topic through a human rights perspective. Speakers included Mr. Davor Derenčinović, Judge of the European Court of Human Rights, Ms Lorraine Schembri Orland, Judge of the European Court of Human Rights, Mr Peter Maassen, Professor at the University of Oslo, Norway, Mr Zoltan Ronay, Professor at the Eotvos Lorand University in Budapest, Hungary and Mr Gergely Kovats, Professor at the Corvinus University in Budapest, Hungary. The panel was moderated by Mr Matjaž Gruden, Director, Directorate for Democracy, Council of Europe.
