Vasiliki Kosta speaks at Council of Europe Conference

Dr Kosta spoke at the conference entitled 'Academic freedom in action: a step forward in safeguarding democracy', which took place Strasbourg on 13 and 14 November. The conference brought together experts, lecturers and policymakers to underline the democratic mission of higher education and the importance of safeguarding academic freedom. This event also marked the launch of the Council of Europe’s 'Academic Freedom in Action' project, which aims to protect and promote the essential value of academic freedom in higher education.

Dr Kosta participated in the panel discussion on 'Academic freedom and the fundamental values of higher education', which was organised in collaboration with the European Court of Human Rights and examined the topic from a human rights perspective. The speakers included Mr Davor Derenčinović (Judge at the European Court of Human Rights), Ms Lorraine Schembri Orland (Judge at the European Court of Human Rights), Mr Professor Peter Maassen (University of Oslo, Norway), Professor Zoltan Ronay (Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest, Hungary) and Professor Gergely Kovats (Corvinus University of Budapest, Hungary). The panel discussion was moderated by Mr Matjaž Gruden, Director of Democratic Participation at the Council of Europe.
