Successful start of new Governance of Migration and Diversity LL.M.

On 30 September 2024, the newly established LL.M. track of the multidisciplinary Governance of Migration and Diversity master's programme welcomed its pioneer students during the GMD academic year opening event at the Wijkpaleis in Rotterdam. During this informative day, students met the academic coordinators of the programme and got to know each other and the teaching staff.

After lunch, Professor Marlou Schrover of Leiden University organised the legendary Migration walking tour through Rotterdam finishing at the famous ‘Hotel New York’, the former headquarters of the Holland-Amerika Line.

Together with the other tracks of the GMD programme (Public Administration, History, Sociology and Development Studies), the students of the LL.M. track will start their studies in the multidisciplinary programme at the University of Leiden, Erasmus University Rotterdam, and the Technical University of Delft. Students who enrolled in the legal track offered by Leiden Law School, come from nine countries from all over the world – the furthest as far as New Zealand and China. The group consists of professionals from different legal branches, such as governmental and judicial positions, as well as enthusiastic students who have just freshly graduated from their bachelor's degrees – all sharing their passion for the challenges posed by migration and diversity in the 21sty Century.

The students’ first classes started in the first week of September, with a legal course on the Protection of Human Rights and a multidisciplinary course Governance of Migration and Diversity – a joint course, attended by GMD students from all five tracks, offering interdisciplinary insights and knowledge on the topic as well as networking opportunities for students.

As the Coordinator of the GMD legal track, Moritz Jesse, Jean Monnet Professor for Migration, Integration and Non-Discrimination, was pleased to confirm after the first week that the programme does indeed bring together lawyers who want to approach the governance of migration and diversity from more angles than black-letter law alone, namely through a multidisciplinary master's programme that enables placing the law in its political, social, and historical context: ‘We’re going to teach lawyers to think outside of the box and who will have studied alongside students from other disciplines in one common, coherent master programme.'
