Leiden master’s students in Labour Law compete at Hugo Sinzheimer Moot Court Competition in Vienna

From 20 to 23 June 2024, the prestigious Hugo Sinzheimer Moot Court Competition took place in Vienna. Students from Leiden Law School also participated.

Travelling from 13 countries, a total of 52 students competed in this moot court competition dealing with European labour law. They took on the role of lawyers before a jury of judges who are all internationally renowned experts. Topics dealt with during the competition included highly complex and topical issues within the field of European labour law such as dubious corporate relationships, the exploitation of temp workers, whistleblowers and much more.

The students were assessed on their written papers, which they had worked hard on over the past months leading up to the event, as well as on their individual oral arguments during the competition.

The level of this ninth edition of the moot court competition was extremely high and in the end the Danish team came out on top. The team from the Netherlands performed very well and was awarded an average 8.3 from the jury for their written papers and 8.6 for their oral arguments.

Heleen Andriessen, a PhD candidate at the Department of Labour Law and Social Security, was one of the coaches of this year’s moot court team from the Netherlands.

The excellent performance of all 13 participating countries was concluded with a celebratory dinner and party.
