Saying goodbye to Prof Carsten de Dreu on 18 June

After eight years as professor at the Institute of Psychology, Carsten de Dreu is making the move to the University of Groningen, where he has been appointed to the chair ‘Foundations of Cooperation and Social Organisation’. On 18 June, he will bid farewell to colleagues at Leiden University.

De Dreu's fundamental research is characterised by an interdisciplinary approach, with connections between psychology, economics, sociology and biology

As may be known, Prof Dr Carsten de Dreu has accepted a position at the University of Groningen from 1 August. After a previous appointment at the University of Amsterdam, Carsten joined the Social, Economic and Organisational Psychology section as a professor in 2015. Here, his research on conflict and cooperation contributed (and still contributes) greatly to the successful research programme ‘Social Decision Making’. Nationally and internationally, the high quality of his research has been appreciated, leading, among other things, in his Leiden period to the award of the Carole and Ed Diener Award for Social Psychology (2017), the Spinoza Prize (2018), and most recently the Alexander von Humboldt Research Prize (2024).

His basic research is characterised by an interdisciplinary approach, with connections between psychology, economics, sociology and biology. The new position at the University of Groningen offers him the opportunity to expand this interdisciplinarity even further with his appointment to the interfaculty chair ‘Foundations of Cooperation and Social Organisation’. We obviously hate to see Carsten leave as a section and as an institute, but we also understand that this is a great new adventure that seems tailor-made for him. We therefore wish him and the University of Groningen every success.

On 18 June, a ‘farewell drink’ is planned in the FSW restaurant; from 16.00 to 17.30 hours. This will be a good opportunity for all interested parties from our institute to shake hands and speak to him in person.
