PhD defence Wessel Geursen, Christa Tobler member of the reading and examining committees

On 19 April 2024, Wessel Geursen, former associate at the Department of European Law of Leiden University, defended his dissertation on 'Mapping the Territorial Scope of EU law' at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

According to the foreword by Jacques Ziller, honorary professor at the Universities of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and Università di Pavia, the work is 'more than "mapping", it is a very thorough in-depth examination of the way EU law applies to its member states' territories, and in certain circumstances to third states' territories'. Professor Christa Tobler was a member of both the reading committee and the examining committee. During the defence, she asked questions about the legal status of the EEA/EFTA states in relation to the EU and the area of application of their law.
