Leiden University represents the Netherlands in 2024 Jessup International Rounds
On 16 February, Leiden University participated in the Dutch National Rounds of the 2024 Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, the world's largest moot court competition featuring participants from approximately 700 law schools across the world.
After receiving the Runner-Up Award and the Best Oralist Award (Iris van Baarsel), Leiden University had the honour of representing the Netherlands in the White & Case International Rounds that took place from 30 March to 6 April in Washington DC.
In this year’s International Rounds, 143 teams of law students from across the globe addressed The Case Concerning the Sterren Forty between the states Antrano and Remisia. This case touched upon various legal issues, including the right to political expression, statelessness, the right to a nationality and the scope of the United Nations Security Council's authority in the pacific settlement of disputes.
Leiden University was represented by Irfan Fadilah, currently enrolled in the Advanced LL.M. programme in International Dispute Settlement and Arbitration, alongside Leonor Corte Real Trabulo de Teles Baltazar, Maria Fico, Iris van Baarsel and Guilherme Santos Silva, all enrolled on the LL.M. programme in Public International Law. The team was coached by Annick Vossebelt, teaching and research associate at the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies, and Robbert Thierens, a student on the Advanced LL.M. programme in Public International Law.
