Writing retreat COI book project March 2024

From March 13-15, 2024, the authors participating in the book project of the Institutions for Conflict Resolution research group went away for a writing retreat in the green spaces of Soesterberg.

The book will be targeted at a broad audience. It focuses on the changing role of the judge in conflicts on both the micro and macro levels. How can the judiciary optimally deal with the expectations regarding its problem-solving capacities, and what are the consequences of this for trust in the judiciary and judicial legitimacy? Researchers from Leiden and beyond will provide answers to these and related questions based on the research that has been taking place within the COI research program in recent years.

The writing retreat consisted of plenary sessions (including one on accessible writing) as well as with break-out sessions in which the various author teams worked on their chapters. This hard work was alternated with pleasant collective lunches and dinners and opportunities to explore the beautiful environment. On Friday afternoon, we concluded with a plenary session in which the author teams presented the overall content of their chapters as well as an accessibly written sample paragraph. The editors also presented their ideas about the final chapter of the book, which will be based on focus group discussions with judges who reflect on the research findings.
