Ben Van Rompuy discusses application of EU competition law to sports governance at GCLC Lunch Talk
Ben Van Rompuy was a guest speaker at the 138th Lunch Talk of the Global Competition Law Centre (College of Europe), which took place in Brussels on 15 January 2024.
On 21 December 2023, the Court of Justice of the European Union, in its composition as Grand Chamber, delivered three landmark judgments relating to the application of EU competition law and EU free movement law to sports governance: European Super League Company (Case C-333/21), International Skating Union v. Commission (Case C-124/21 P), and Royal Antwerp Football Club (Case C-680/21).
Together with Gero Meessen (a member of the Legal Service of the European Commission), Van Rompuy discussed these judgments and their far-reaching implications for EU sports law and EU competition law in general. The panel was moderated by Jose Rivas (Partner and Co Head Brussels Competition Practice at Bird & Bird LLP).
