Successful field trip Adv. LLM programme in European and International Human Rights Law
The annual excursion of the Adv. LLM programme in European and International Human Rights Law (EIHRL) took place from Sunday 16 to Saturday 21 April.
The group of 29 students visited, among others, the Council of Europe in Strasbourg and the United Nations and the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) in Geneva. The Permanent Representations of the Netherlands in Strasbourg and Geneva received the group as well. The programme included well over 20 presentations; speakers included Judge Mykola Gnatovskyy (the Ukrainian judge in the ECtHR), Ambassador Paul Bekkers (Permanent Representative to the UN and other organisations), Dr Jeroen Schokkenbroek (Director of Anti-Discrimination at Council of Europe) and Ugo Cedrangolo (Secretary of the UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances). Of particular note was the high number of Leiden alumni among the speakers: over half. In total, the group met eight alumni of the EIHRL programme who are now working at the Council of Europe or the UN. The programme of the excursion was compiled by Prof Rick Lawson; practical matters were in the hands of Mahshid Alizadeh and Theo Tsomidis – the trio who also accompanied the study trip.
