Michiel Tjepkema appointed professor at Open University
From 1 March 2023, Michiel Tjepkema has been appointed professor of government liability and mining damage at the Open University in the Netherlands. Tjepkema is a former associate professor at the Department of Constitutional and Administrative Law and remains affiliated to this department as a guest staff member.
The aim of the chair is to develop high-quality fundamental and applied research and postgraduate education on government liability and the settlement of mining damage. In this position, Tjepkema will focus on various administrative law and civil law questions concerning damage settlement. His research will focus not only on questions of legal aspects such as causality and evidence, but also on the effective and efficient design of the process of compensation for damages. He also intends to investigate how administrative bodies can adopt a service-oriented approach that does not merely approach citizens' problems from a strictly legal angle. This will also allow lessons to be drawn from what has gone well and not so well around the settlement of mining claims in Groningen.
