The Leiden University Centre for the Study of Religion (LUCSoR) and the Beheerstichting Theologische Fondsen hand out two thesis prizes each year, one for the best bachelor thesis and one for the best master thesis. Each of the prizes comes with a cash prize of €500. The prize money comes from the Fund for Religious Studies that is administered by the Leiden University Fund (LUF).
Lara Offermans has won the BA prize for her thesis, titled, “Lyckpredicatiën, dansspelen, en andere superstitiën: Cultuurgeschiedenis van de dood in de gereformeerde Nederlanden tussen 1571-1700”. Lara was supervised by Dr. Tom-Eric Krijger. Marijn Bethlehem has won the MA prize for her thesis, titled, “The Failure of QAnon’s Storm: A Study of Conspiracy Theories and Failed Prophecy”. Marijn was supervised by Dr. Markus Davidsen.
Due to the pandemic, this year’s prizes included theses submitted over a two-year period (2019-2021). In order to be eligible, all theses must have received a mark of 8.0 or above. During the eligibility period, there were 5 BA theses and 3 MA theses that met this requirement. Prof. Ab de Jong and Prof. Eric Jorink served on the selection committee, in which they assessed the theses on the basis of: (1) having a direct link with Religious Studies; (2) the quality of primary source research; (3) the quality of the links with the secondary literature; and (4) the way in which it contributes to new insights and questions.
Congratulations on this achievement, Lara and Marijn!
