Moritz Jesse Speaker at European Constitutionalism And the Virus of Distrust Conference in Prague
Moritz Jesse, Associate Professor at the Europa Institute Leiden, was a speaker at the International Conference European Constitutionalism And the Virus of Distrust Conference, which took place on 27 and 28 April in Prague. The Conference brought together academics from all over the European Union to exchange ideas on how, in times of populist politics and international instabilities, politics and the law of the European Union could be used to counter increasing tendencies of distrust within Europe.
Moritz Jesse spoke about the influence of the Covid-19 pandemic on free movement in the European Union and how this long-standing and most positively cherished achievement of EU integration was under threat by measures seeking to control the pandemic. Yet, Jesse finished on a positive note: being stripped of the freedom to move, European Citizens might actually appreciate said freedom more after the pandemic - especially also against the background of the ongoing war in Ukraine. As such, returning back to the situation before the pandemic might also restore trust on the European Continent.
