Andean Community Committee on Indigenous rights
Representatives of the Andean Community (Comunidad Andina/CAN) and its Member States met in Quito, Ecuador last month and approved a decision creating the ‘Andean Committee of Government Authorities on the rights of Indigenous Peoples.’
This body will ensure the coordination of the Andean states’ policies for the 9.8 million indigenous peoples living in the region. It will take action to promote indigenous rights and the implementation of international conventions and treaties, and to share indigenous perspectives on issues ranging from climate change to the preservation of languages.
