Improvement of Paraguayan drinking water and sanitation supported by MERCOSUR
MERCOSUR recently renewed its commitment to and support for contributing to the improvement of drinking water and sanitation in Paraguay, a member state which faces challenges in this area particularly for lower socioeconomic and vulnerable groups.
This cause intends to be advanced through an addendum to the project ‘Construction and Improvement of Potable Water and Basic Sanitation Systems in Small Rural and Indigenous Communities of the Country’, signed by representatives of Paraguay and MERCOSUR. The original project was approved by the Common Market Council in 2007.
MERCOSUR used its own financing mechanism, the MERCOSUR Structural Convergence Fund (FOCEM). This fund, a solidarity financing mechanism amongst the MERCOSUR countries, aims to reduce asymmetries in the bloc.
