COI PhD Day 2021
On 5 November 2021, the second PhD day organised within the context of the research theme Institutions for Conflict Resolution (COI) took place in Utrecht. COI is a collaboration between Leiden University, Utrecht University, and Radboud University Nijmegen that serves to implement the Netherlands Sector Plan Law.
During the PhD day, twenty PhD candidates connected to COI from Nijmegen, Leiden and Utrecht came together. They presented their research projects and were inspired by those of the other candidates. This hybrid event was organised by Laura Henderson, Max Vetzo and Emanuel van Dongen (Utrecht University).
The day started with a welcome by Emanuel van Dongen and Rianka Rijnhout at 9.15 a.m. After the opening, four parallel sessions took place during which the PhD candidates presented their papers and received feedback on them. The candidates had 15 minutes to present their projects, after which they received a response from a referee (10 minutes) and the general audience (10 minutes). Critical questions were asked, views were shared and advice was given.
In between sessions there was a coffee break and afterwards there was a lunch, which allowed the candidates to network and discuss their projects with the candidates who were not in their sessions.
After the lunch, the candidates followed an inspiring workshop on 'outreach by writer and journalist' given by Arend Hulshof. This workshop concluded the substantive part of the day. The social part continued with drinks and bites in the Central Hall of Utrecht University, and after that a dinner at Restaurant de Rechtbank. Many thanks to the organisers and the candidates for making this day a memorable one.
