Jorrit Rijpma legal expert on Schengen for the European Economic and Social Committee
On 20 October 2021 the plenary of the European Economic and Social Committee adopted its opinion on the proposed EU strategy for the Schengen area.
The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) welcomed the new EU strategy for the future of the Schengen area put forward by the European Commission, but also underlined the need to respect fundamental rights in full in the management of the external borders.
We are asking the European Commission and the European Border and Coast Guard Agency to monitor and fix these worrying issues and to follow up on reports of fundamental rights violations without delay, said the rapporteur of the opinion, IonuĊ£ Sibian.
Jorrit Rijpma was involved in the drafting of the opinion as legal expert.
