Research: interest in teacher training degree in The Hague
Like other big cities, The Hague is facing a severe teacher shortage. A new university teaching degree might help solve this problem. Research has shown that secondary school students would be interested in this option.
Almost 1,500 secondary school students took part in the research. Nearly 290 of these said they would be very interested in such a programme. Over a third of the respondents said they would find a university teacher training degree more attractive than a regular teacher training programme.
Leiden University and universities of applied sciences in the region are looking together at whether a university teacher training degree can be realised in The Hague. Graduates from this programme would have to be qualified to teach at primary schools and the first two or three years of secondary school. The programme would also pay particular attention to urban themes and promoting equal opportunities in education.
